I would want to be a consul because I would want power over who is in the senate. I would want to choose senate members because the senate played one of the most important roles in Rome. They made many important decisions and also had the most members. I wouldn't want anyone to be in the consul that didn't have the intelligence and maturity to be a member. That's why I would want to be a consul.
Ancient Rome decided to switch from a monarchy to a republic. They switched to a republic because they didn't want all the power to go to one person. Rome wanted to somewhat evenly spread the power in a government. They did this by splitting the government into multiple "groups". Although they wanted the power to be evenly spread, in times of a crisis, a dictator would be chosen and the dictator would have all power. The dictators would only rule for six months. The Romans used checks and balances, which was a way of splitting up power in a political party or government so that one group or individual doesn't have all power.

The 12 tables were a set of laws that ancient Rome established. These laws were established because criminals that were breaking the laws claimed that they didn't know they were breaking the law. Also Rome felt like it needed some official laws to set the guidelines of not being a criminal. The 12 tables influenced in a good number of ways.
There are three branches in our government, Legislative, Judicial, and Executive. The Roman Republic had three branches of government, the Consuls, the Senate, and the Praetors. The United States government is similar to the Roman Republic's government because we both have three branches that have certain amounts of power each. Our government is also similar to the Roman Republic because both our governments have broken up power. In other words, both of our governments have equal divided power. Also, our government has a senate that makes laws and decisions for the country. There are also many differences between the Roman republic and our modern day government. One of these differences is that in times of crisis, we don't have dictators that are elected like the Romans did. When the Romans were in times of a crisis, a dictator would be chosen to make all laws and decisions. These dictators would serve for six months.
